Ice climbing in Nuuksio – a positive surprise
Monday, February 14th, 2011 13:38 by juho Print Print this page

Last weekend I and my climbing partner Jari ended up climbing in Nuuksio, Espoo (close to Helsinki, Finland). We knew that we should find a few decent lines there and indeed we did. While there is much less selection in Nuuksio than for instance in Korouoma, both in terms of height and difficulty, it was a positive surprise. The two lead lines we did in the right sector there offered steep enough ice, roughly 30-40 of height with one or two snow sections in between. In addition to lead climbs in the right sector, we soloed a few boulders in mid sector and one icy slope in the left sector. As I forgot my camera home the image quality is what we got out of Jari’s mobile phone – not too great, but at least you get some impression of what it is there. All of the images are from the right sectorr.

Cool pictures! I’ve been aching to get back out on the ice. I have not done it since the Ice Climbing Festival in Ouray, Co.

Thanks. Ice is just great, especially those high ones in Norway. :-) I guess I should get my self to your side of Atlantic at some point… we’ll I’ve done some skiing at Lake Tahoe there, but no ice climbing so far. Any reccomendations there?

Wish I could help you. I really just started ice climbing. Ouray, Colorado for sure has some good stuff. Here in Utah, you got Provo Canyon in Provo, Utah; and a little bit in Little Cottonwood Canyon (just 25 mins outside of Salt Lake City). I think Colorado is supposed to be the mecca of the sport.

Colorado it will be then… :-) …though I’d also like to visit Alaska, but mostly because of the ski touring, the high mountans and wilderness there. Hopefully you’ll get a good grip of ice climbing. I started in 2002 or 2003 and the sport feels better every day. Oh, and in case you’re interested, there’s an invitation to check out my “other project”, http://www.tribevine.com in your email. … it would be great if you would have time to take look at it and perhaps invite a few friends to look as well (+ join in a few tribes, such as ice climbrers).
